Back to college: Talk to your kids, they're listening

College is back in session. All over the country freshmen students are taking their first steps into adulthood.  It can be a very exciting time for young adults as they lay their first building blocks towards a career and a life of productivity. However, college can also be a stressful time for students as they seek to fit in their surroundings and create a sense of belonging that will allow them to fully live the college experience.

At The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, we know that binge drinking on college campuses is a dangerous issue that needs to be addressed.  We believe that a comprehensive approach, which includes all the stakeholders, is the only way forward. Students can also be part of the solution by effectively communicating with their peers.  There is also a role for parents who should have a conversation with their children regarding dangerous over consumption of alcohol, not only during the Back to School season, but throughout the whole year.

As mentioned in the Huffington Post Article by Elaine Pawlowski, “parents may have trained their children to call 911 at home”, it’s also important for parents to prepare their kids for action when they are on campus.

Therefore, it is imperative to enable our students to react positively and responsibly to this issue. For the past 3 years, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has supported student led campaigns on several campuses across the US that address this very issue.  One of the campaigns, “VITALS” by the students at Texas Christian University, highlights the symptoms of alcohol poisoning and urges the students to know these symptoms in order to avoid finding themselves in a life threatening situation.

We agree with the author that students need to be better prepared to face the risky situations that they face in colleges. But at the same time we should be preparing our students to have all the positive experiences college has to offer.  It Takes Less Than You Think to turn a great college experience into a tragic event, and at The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, we believe that students are able to change this trend. They are this nation’s future, and they should be prepared to fulfill that role.
