Texas Christian University’s student-led campaign VITALS – an acronym that stands for Vomiting, Incoherence, Temperature, Absence of Color, Low breathing and Seizure – is an offshoot of the PROOF campaign presented as TCU’s team at the 2009 American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition.

A benchmark survey conducted prior to the campaign’s implementation on campus revealed that almost one-third of TCU’s undergraduate students reported that “they or their friends have experienced alcohol poisoning”, however, “their knowledge of the signs of alcohol poisoning that should prompt a call for medical help” is limited.

Based on the bystander intervention model, the VITALS campaign seeks to increase knowledge on alcohol poisoning symptoms among students and empower them to intervene when their friends and peers are in need of help.  It will kick-off on campus this September and will conclude in April 2012.
