The 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health was released today. There's little good news to report. Underage drinking is up slightly over last year, bucking the downward trend of the last six years.
In 2009 10.4 million 12-20 year olds, 27.2% of this age group, reported drinking in the past month.
18.1% of youths aged 12-20 report binge drinking (5 units in a row for males, 4 for females)
5.4% of youths aged 12-20 reported heavy drinking (5 or more units on 5 or more days in the past 30), down almost 2% from last year
Additionally, 8 out of 10 who reported past month consumption said they were with two or more people the last time they drank. 56% said their last time drinking was in someone else's home, and 29% reported it was in their own home.
We're committed to stopping underage drinking. We urge you to learn how to prevent underage drinking in your own community.
