Yesterday, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility was pleased to join our partner the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), for their annual Speak Out! day on Capitol Hill. We teamed up with NASPE members and PE teachers to stress the importance of quality physical education to our elected officials. The goal of Speak Out! day was to encourage the development of public policy that advances physical education, sport, and physical activity in the U.S. Research shows that kids who are active do better academically and that they are also less likely to engage in risky behavior such as underage drinking. Awards were given to Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) for their leadership on these important issues. NASPE is focused on three legislative efforts:
- The PHYSICAL Act – S. 392
- The FIT Kids Act (PDF) -- H.R. 1057
- Ensuring that a grant program that provides funding for physical education equipment (PEP grants) is continued.
It all ties in really well with our message for kids to “Say YES to a healthy lifestyle, and NO to underage drinking!”
