What do The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, Morgan State University, Morehouse College, and Shaquille O’Neal have in common?
They will all be on Capitol Hill next week discussing college binge drinking and their efforts to fight high-risk drinking on college campuses.
The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has been working to fight college binge drinking for more than ten years. More than a year ago we teamed up with basketball legend Dr. Shaquille O’Neal to work with college campuses on developing innovative student generated PSAs targeting their peers to encourage responsible drinking.
Earlier this year, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and Morgan State University partnered to research college binge drinking among HBCU students and here’s the scoop:
- Students on HBCU campuses have different attitudes and behaviors regarding alcohol.
- The majority of HBCU students who drink and go out socially self-report binge drinking on a weekly basis.
- Perceptions and how they handle drinking is different from the national study.
- HBCU Students are less likely to report binge drinking on a weekly basis but are more likely to pre-game (48 percent).
Simply put, national strategies to stop binge drinking can always be more effective. Through our research, we believe the voice of the student is one of the most important voices in battling this problem. That’s why The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has drafted basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal and Morehouse College to work with students on college campuses.
