Helping kids say ‘YES’ to a healthy lifestyle and ‘NO’ to underage drinking is really important. This morning I was invited to Al Roker’s morning show “Wake Up With Al.” We spoke about April being Alcohol Awareness Month and also about my work with Ask, Listen, Learn and visiting middle schools across the country.

The Ask, Listen, Learn program is personal for me. My daughter Trinity is in the target demographic of Ask, Listen, Learn. She’s already a successful young girl in so many ways and I don’t want her to get involved in drinking underage because it would take away her ability to function at 100%. The more kids I can talk to the more hopeful I am they will steer clear of alcohol and be able to excel in school and life.

Also, as someone who runs for a living, competing against some of the fastest people in the world, I know that you have to keep your health at 100% to be truly successful. I have to take care of my body and if I had fallen into the world of underage drinking as a kid I wouldn’t be where I am today. There’s no question about it.

The message I want to drive home to kids is simple: dream big and make healthy choices – like saying NO to drinking while underage. And the message I want to get to parents is just as simple: get involved in your kids life. Make sure they understand that you don’t approve of underage drinking and tell them why it is speak to them with honestly and love. Learn how to talk to your kids about underage drinking.
