Drunk driving: Just plain wrong.

These crashes are just plain wrong. Lives are lost. Families are forever broken.

Over the weekend, horrific crashes in California and Florida that killed almost a dozen people, and involved an impaired driver traveling in the wrong direction have shaken us here at The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility. We see these stories every day. We know victims of these crashes. And we know how they can be prevented. Yet, these crashes still shake us to the core and remind us how much work there is left to do to eliminate drunk driving. While we don’t know all the details yet, all signs point to these crashes involving a drunk driver.

Since it was founded over 20 years ago, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has been a leader in the fight to combat drunk driving. We have developed a particular focus on specific countermeasures aimed at stopping hardcore drunk driving. Hardcore drunk drivers are those who drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or above, or who do so repeatedly, demonstrated by having more than one impaired driving arrest, and who are highly resistant to changing their behavior despite previous sanctions, treatment or education efforts. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in a report on wrong-way driving crashes between 2004 and 2009, approximately 60 percent of wrong-way crashes involved alcohol and the majority of crashes involved a drunk driver with a BAC over .15. We applaud NTSB’s efforts to draw attention to this issue and highlight the involvement of hardcore drunk driving in these horrific crashes.

The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has developed programs and resources with key partners to effectively address hard core drunk driving system-wide, including with judges, prosecutors, community supervision and probation, law enforcement, government agencies, elected officials and experts in the education and adolescent health fields.
