IKnowEverything guide to National Teen Driver Safety Week

Since October 20-26, 2013 is National Teen Driver Safety Week, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, along with the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, International Association of Chiefs of Police Foundation, National Organizations for Youth Safety, and the National Sheriffs’ Association, is proud to share our dynamic teen driver safety program, IKnowEverything! Developed to prepare teens to be safe when they get behind the wheel, IKnowEverything is an integrated effort that highlights the issues of drunk driving and distracted driving, and reiterates to parents that they have the most influence on their teen’s driving behaviors.

We all know teens are overly confident and think they’re invincible – particularly when they get into the driver’s seat. The IKnowEverything program includes an engaging, fast-paced animated video featuring a teen’s voiceover that suggests that teens “Know Everything” like:

  • I know not to drink alcohol and drive, it’s dangerous, illegal and just plain stupid.
  • I know not to text and drive.
  • I know my parents can take away my keys anytime.
  • I know I need to pay attention 100% of the time while driving.

For National Teen Driver Safety Week, we are very proud to welcome the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) as program partners on IKnowEverything. FCCLA will help us bring the program to schools throughout the United States in 2014. We are also proud to be welcomed as a formal member of the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) and continue to work with them to offer IKnowEverything to their members.

We are also launching a newly redesigned website at www.IKnowEverything.com. Teen drivers and parents can watch the video, find driver safety facts, tips for safe driving, download a facilitator’s guide for practitioners and get information on your state’s teen driver safety laws.  This program can be used as a supplement to your existing outreach to teens and their parents on driver safety issues, wherever you are engaging with them. Encourage teens and parents to watch the video together and regularly discuss driving safety. Check out our infographic, too!

Finally, we taped PSAs with Members of Congress from across the country with two-time U.S. Olympic Gold medalist, Aly Raisman, so stay tuned in your state!

The IKnowEverything program was formally introduced in May for Global Youth Traffic Safety MonthTM by disseminating materials to Members of Congress, Attorneys General, traffic safety practitioners and other elected officials. We featured blogs from our program partners, participated in the Long Short Walk with the National Organizations for Youth Safety and released PSAs with Attorneys General. The IKnowEverything program has also been featured at legislative, driver education, traffic safety and youth leadership conferences throughout the year and used by judges to improve teen driver safety.
