Teen driver safety initiatives in your community: Part 2

The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility is always on the lookout for innovative and creative programs across the country that help highlight the issues of teen driving, particularly drunk and distracted driving, and especially since May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month.

If you’ve been on our website this month, you should be familiar with The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility’s IKnowEverything program and what we’re doing to enhance teen driver safety. This new program aims to provide teen drivers with the necessary information to steer clear from unsafe driving behavior and it also reiterates to parents that they have the most influence on their teen’s driving behaviors.

This month, we have featured the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) and the Act Out Loud campaign, DCH Auto Group on their activities, as well as Teen Road Safety Assessments. We would like to provide more information on useful resources for parents and their teen drivers in the hopes that it will start the conversation about teen driver safety. Here are a few more programs that you can find in your community:

  1. DriveitHOME: Created by the Allstate foundation, it aims to help parents to keep their teen drivers safe.
  2. CelebrateMyDrive: Created by State Farm, it emphasizes the positives of safe driving.
  3. Ford Driving Skills for Life:  Created by our partners at the Governors Highway Safety Administration, it aims to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard drive education.
  4. TeenSmart skills:  Created by Adept Driver, the program is a “computer based crash avoidance program for teen drivers”. The program focuses on six research areas which are believed to cause the largest number of teen crashes:  visual search, hazard detection, speed adjustment, space management, risk perception and lifestyle issues. The National Safety Council also announced last week that it will be offering the program as well in an effort that shows how important an issue teen distracted driving has become.

We hope that these resources will come in handy for teen drivers and their parents across the country. For more information and additional resources, please visit www.iknoweverything.com/resources. And be sure to follow us on social media for the rest of May for more information on our activities during Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, and our efforts to encourage safe driving among teens!
