Each year, the fourth Thursday of April is one of the most exciting days during Alcohol Awareness Month. It’s National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day! It’s also the perfect opportunity to talk to both parents and kids about the importance of saying “yes” to a healthy lifestyle and “no” to underage drinking.
For the seventh year, the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility celebrated the day by hosting an event on Capitol Hill for Congressional staff and kids. Attendees learned how important it is to be active and how being active helps you retain what you learn. They were also encouraged to start conversations about how to make responsible decisions and choices.
Tommy McFly from 94.7 Fresh FM kicked off the event and acted as the Master of Ceremonies, and Kellee McQuinn of KidTribe got everyone hula hooping to start the event. Two people who know how important it is to stay in shape, Teddy and Abe of the Washington Nationals Racing Presidents, were on hand to take pictures with kids and kids at heart.
Carnival games including basketball, skeeball and football toss kept everyone moving. Attendees also got to play the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive game, the most widely-distributed game of its kind in the country. Developed for middle school-aged kids, the Ask, Listen, Learn game and program teach kids to ask questions and provides parents with the resources to start what can seem like a daunting conversation with their kids. There was also a flip book photo booth available that introduced parents and teens to our IKnowEverything teen driver safety program. IKnowEverything reminds new drivers and their parents that teens might know a lot about making smart choices when they’re behind the wheel, but it takes years of experience to really “know everything” about driving safely.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. We hope you had fun, and that you’re talking about #responsibility this Alcohol Awareness Month!
