Here's an update from IKnowEverything's trip around the US!

How much do you really know about safe driving? Did you know motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens? Did you know more than 300,000 teens are injured in crashes each year, and thousands more are killed? With the IKnowEverything program, we’re looking to change those statistics.

Between January and May, we’re traveling to 20 schools across the country to collect data on teens’ knowledge of driver safety. The results from each school will be used in a national study, which will be used in classrooms across the country, allowing teachers to better, more effectively educate their students on teen driver safety and help Responsibility.org bring awareness to the gaps in new teen drivers’ knowledge. We kicked off the IKnowEverything challenge in January at William Byrd High School in Roanoke, Virginia and now we are headed to Decatur, Alabama for one of our last events. With only five events left, we are looking forward to compiling the data and using the results to better teen driver education! The IKnowEverything challenge has been a great way to teach students about teen driver safety while also collecting important data and allowing the students who participate to be part of the solution!

2014 has flown by for IKnowEverything. The last few months have been a huge success! From Edison, New Jersey to Elko, Nevada, we have traveled all over the United States and will have completed 20 events in 15 states by the end. We had a number of notable attendees speak at our events on the dangers of distracted driving and drunk driving, including Shelby, Ohio Mayor Marilyn John, Pennsylvania State Representative Jesse White and Lieutenant Eric Jones from Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office. Our speakers always help open the eyes of students when they speak about personal experiences. Charri Jensen, FCCLA Advisor at Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah, even started to tear up as she spoke about a funeral she attended for one of her students who passed away from a car crash. Jensen said, “as a teacher, I love every one of you. I don’t want to have to go to another funeral.”

The IKnowEverything challenges allows students to walk away feeling more prepared to drive on the road. The program gives us a great chance to find out what new teen drivers already know and where we need to fill the gaps. The school year is coming to an end, but sit tight because we still have a few more IKnowEverything events!
