ARLINGTON, VA – Since its inception in 1991, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has been steadfast in its mission to fight drunk driving and underage drinking. While much progress has been made by attacking these problems head on, it is also important to examine these issues in a larger cultural context. The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility is proud to be celebrating its 20th Anniversary and recognizes that the past 20 years could not have been a success without the support of remarkable individuals who encourage health, wellness, and a commitment to eliminating drunk driving and underage drinking.

As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility will honor 20 People to Watch. These twenty people have distinguished themselves through their leadership, ideas and commitment to the health and safety of our nation and the idea of a brighter future for America’s young people. Young or old, established in their chosen professions, or just starting out, these twenty people are ones we are excited to follow in the future.

In 2010, Apolo Anton Ohno made history becoming the most decorated U.S. winter athlete, tallying his winter medal count to eight in Vancouver last February. He is also a 12-time U.S. National Champion and the first and only American to capture the overall World Championships title. As an elite-level athlete, Ohno understands the need to live a healthy and active lifestyle to succeed. Following his success in Vancouver, Ohno partnered with The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and its Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don’t Mix program. In his capacity as a spokesperson for the program he has visited numerous schools and has reached out to thousands of children across the United States, encouraging them to forgo underage drinking.

Ohno has been a tireless supporter of The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don’t Mix, speaking to children and adults across the country as well as promoting the program and The Foundation’s efforts in television interviews and through his social media outlets. Through his efforts, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility has been able to reach a broader youth audience across the United States.

“I look back at my junior high school days and I think about all the opportunities I had to do something negative. The position I’m in now with The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and Ask, Listen, Learn put me in a place where I can make a difference today,” said Ohno.

“While there are many people who come to mind, Apolo is an individual who has true passion for the work The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility does. As one of our 20 People to Watch, Apolo has been an instrumental component in our efforts across the country in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking,” said Ralph Blackman, President and CEO of The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility. The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility is proud to celebrate the innovative contributions it has made over 20 years and can attribute our success to the support, encouragement and commitment of people like Ohno. The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility looks forward to continued progress in the fight against drunk driving, underage drinking and a safer and healthier America. Individuals who are making a difference will help all Americans move towards this goal.
