WASHINGTON, DC - The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility hosted its annual 2010 holiday education event on Capitol Hill. The event aimed to increase awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and making responsible choices, particularly during the holiday season. The Congressional Stop DUI Caucus was in attendance as well as traffic safety advocates.

“The holiday season allocates time for families and friends to gather and enjoy each other’s company. Such gatherings often include alcohol. It is our hope that our event today will help raise awareness in order to prevent drunk driving and also provide educational materials for alternative ways to travel home safely through the holiday season” said Ralph Blackman, President and CEO of The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility. There were 1,079 drunk driving fatalities during the winter holidays in 2009 alone and therefore it is important that we continue efforts to stop drunk driving and underage drinking, especially during the holiday season.

Attendees at the event could try on Fatal Vision Goggles in order to safely experience what it feels like to be at high BAC levels, see the effects on motor skills, and better understand the dangers of drunk driving. The Capitol Police were at the event to administer mock Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Additionally, attendees were able to play The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility’s Snowman Stumble video game. Players of the Snowman Stumble video game made decisions for the snowman and tried to get him home safely from a holiday party. Finally, materials were available on the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s (WRAP) SoberRide initiative in the metro area for the Holiday Season.
