WASHINGTON, DC--While underage drinking and drunk driving fatalities are at historic record low levels it is important to recognize there is still more that can be done. Today The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, recognized Congressman GT Thompson (R-PA) with its 2012 Leadership Award. During his tenure in the U.S. Congress Rep. Thompson has shown an outstanding commitment to fight drunk driving and underage drinking in Pennsylvania.
Congressman Thompson is a leader in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking and has a long history of working to enrich the lives of Pennsylvania’s youth through his work with the Boy Scouts and as a member of the Bald Eagle Area School Board. His background in therapy and rehabilitation services coupled with his work as a volunteer firefighter has made Congressman Thompson acutely aware of how a person’s life can change forever in an instant.
In May, he went to Central Mountain Middle School in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania and led more than 300 8th grade students in the Ask, Listen, Learn program and interactive game. He spoke with students about making healthy lifestyle choices and about how making good decisions as a middle school student is crucial to each student’s future. He stressed the importance of saying “no” to pressure to drink underage.
At an event on Capitol Hill in October, Congressman Thompson made it possible for The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and Dr. Shaquille O’Neal to brief Congress on new research about the drinking habits of students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
“Congressman GT Thompson has been a tireless advocate for the people in Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District,” said Ralph Blackman, President and CEO of The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility. “His constituents should be proud of Congressman Thompson’s leadership on these important issues facing our country’s youth.”
