Responsibility.org monitors data and trends and develops policy and program initiatives to help eliminate impaired driving. We support proven solutions and practices to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries caused on our nation’s roadways by drunk drivers.
About six percent of United States citizens aged 16 and above have reported driving under the influence of alcohol, raising concerns on multiple levels. In partnership with the National District Attorneys Association’s National Traffic Law Center and involving the collaboration of over 50 state Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutors, we’ve been able to develop resources for criminal justice professionals addressing drunk driving issues.
Our resources:
The most effective way to stop drunk driving is to prevent it from happening in the first place. We believe that we all share the roads and we must all work to keep them safe. We support enforcement and education efforts that help all drivers understand the risks of driving drunk and how to make responsible decisions that ensure their safety as well as the safety of others on the road.
In conjunction with swift identification, Responsibility.org believes that certain punishment is necessary not only to penalize drunk drivers, but to prevent repeat behavior. Public pressure to deal severely with the problem has resulted in stricter legislation and harsher consequences. However, we also believe that it is important to give consideration to individual risks and needs when sanctions are applied.
We support the use of treatment for substance abuse and related problems, along with aftercare, to allow offenders to address their problems with professional help and guidance. When combined with swift identification and certain punishment, treatment is critical as it helps keep the drunk driver from repeating the behavior by addressing underlying factors that lead to DUI, thereby protecting him or her and also protecting the public.
