“Mom, I know. I really don’t need to hear this.”

We understand the struggle – teens have heard messages about safe driving and parents have repeated messages about safe driving. Developed to prepare teens to be safe behind the wheel, IKnowEverything is an integrated effort that highlights the issues of drunk driving and distracted driving, and reiterates to parents that they have the most influence on their teen’s driving behaviors.

The IKnowEverything program encourages teens and their parents to have conversations about drinking and driving, since, in 2013, 29% of young (15-20 year old) drivers who were killed in crashes had a BAC level of .01 or higher.  Although this represents a 9% decrease in the number of young drinking drivers killed in 2013, car crashes remain the number one killer of teens. Learn more about Teen Driver Safety.

In Spring 2014, IKnowEverything Challenge events tested teen driving safety knowledge among more than 2,000 high school students in urban, suburban, and rural communities across the nation. We found that less than half of teens would have received a passing grade. Not only that, a majority (67%) did not understand how to safely navigate a complicated driving situation.

So, parents, what do you do?

We want our kids to be safe drivers. We want to do all that we can to keep them from harm. For parents of teen drivers, this means talking to them about what they need to do to stay safe. They do hear every word. And they know that you – above all others – want them to be safe. Parents’ words are a powerful influence on their kid’s behavior. It may not always seem like it, but it is and research backs this up.
