WASHINGTON, DC - The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers, is honoring leaders who have shown an outstanding commitment to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Senator Alan L. Cropsey (R-33), Senator Patricia L. Birkholz (R-24), Representative Marc R. Corriveau (D-20), and Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton (D-27) are four of ten state legislators from across the country to be recognized for their ongoing dedication.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 11,773 alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities in 2008, with 5,174 of them being persons between the ages of 12 and 20. Of these alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities, 282 alone were in Michigan. Understanding the scope of this national epidemic, this year’s award recipients joined The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility to combat drunk driving and underage drinking.

The following Michigan state legislators worked tirelessly to enhance DWI enforcement: Sen. Cropsey sponsored S.B. 794, Sen. Birkholz sponsored S.B. 795, Rep. Corriveau sponsored H.B. 5273, and Rep. Lipton sponsored H.B. 5274. This legislation creates a three-year DWI/sobriety court interlock pilot project beginning on January 1, 2011 that allows repeat DWI offenders to get restricted licenses if they are participating in a DWI/sobriety court program and have an ignition interlock installed on their vehicle(s). The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility thanks its judicial partners, especially The Honorable Harvey J. Hoffman, who pioneered this effort, and applauds Governor Jennifer M. Granholm who signs this life-saving legislation into law today.

The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility is a not-for-profit organization funded by distillers including: Bacardi U.S.A., Inc.; Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc., Brown-Forman; Constellation Brands, Inc.; DIAGEO; Hood River Distillers, Inc.; Pernod Ricard USA and Sidney Frank Importing Co., Inc. Through legislation, education, and public awareness campaigns, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility is a leader in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking and promotes responsible decision making regarding beverage alcohol.
